The Iowa Department of Education’s 2027-2028 NEW STEM BEST Award supports accredited Iowa public and non-public K-12 school districts and buildings launching new STEM BEST program models that connect classroom learning with business, industry, work-based learning, and future-focused high-demand skills.
Funding and Deadline
Awards are available up to $50,000. A 2:1 state-to-awardee cost-share is required. For example, a $50,000 state award requires $25,000 in awardee match. The Department’s current STEM BEST program page states that applications are due in IowaGrants.gov on November 3, 2026 at 4:59 p.m. Central Time. The IowaGrants storefront displays 5:00 PM, so Atlas uses the Department’s earlier 4:59 p.m. Central Time as the conservative submission control.
Eligible Applicants
Applicants must be accredited Iowa public or non-public school districts or buildings serving students in grades K-12. Clusters of schools and districts are encouraged, with one submitting entity serving as responsible fiscal agent and the application documenting partner roles. School systems that have previously received a STEM BEST award must use the separate Returning STEM BEST application instead.
Program and Allowable Uses
STEM BEST models are designed around school-business partnerships and work-based or career-connected learning. The Department identifies eligible uses including facility upgrades, purchase of industry-grade equipment, acquiring additional space, program-planning time with partners, travel for exploration, curriculum integration, alignment with workplace needs, and professional development for teachers, students, and community partners.
Healthcare and N9+ Fit
The Department expressly includes bioscience, including medicine, among STEM BEST career areas. A health-science proposal can therefore be relevant where a school independently develops a career-connected learning model with healthcare partners. Nonagon N9+ may be a conditional vendor-partner fit if the applicant’s approved program requires connected physical-examination technology for guided exams, vitals, telehealth-enabled clinical encounters, simulation, or related clinical-skills learning. Any product inclusion must be supported by the school’s curriculum, partner plan, budget, match, procurement requirements, and the final approved scope. The award does not automatically approve any named product or vendor.
Match and Direct-Vendor Control
The required non-federal-style applicant match and school-only applicant eligibility mean Dr. Miltie is not a direct applicant path for this opportunity.
