Opportunity Overview
Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is accepting applications for the 2026 Taylor Rural Improvements Grant. The program supports capital projects that create or enhance free, publicly accessible community gathering spaces in small southern Minnesota communities.
Funding and Match
Applicants may request up to $20,000. A mandatory 25% cash or in-kind match is required before SMIF will release awarded grant funds. Projects must be completed by November 18, 2027.
Eligible Applicants and Geography
Eligible applicants include units or agencies of government, IRS-designated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, and public institutions such as public schools and public higher education institutions. Projects must be located within SMIF’s 20-county region or the Prairie Island Indian Community and in communities with populations under 10,000. Ineligible organizations may use an eligible fiscal agent when permitted by the application.
Eligible and Ineligible Uses
Projects must be capital improvements that create or enhance community gathering spaces that are free and open to the public, such as community centers, library community rooms, bandstands, pocket parks, and similar spaces. Childcare projects are excluded from this round because SMIF is operating a separate Taylor Rural Childcare Grant. General operating expenses, legally mandated programs or services including ADA upgrades, routine maintenance, campaigns, and endowments are also excluded.
Application and Deadline
The completed application is submitted online. Applications are due October 6, 2026. The reviewed guidelines do not publish an exact submission cutoff time or time zone, so Atlas does not infer either.
Atlas Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 68/100. This is a legitimate Minnesota rural-community capital opportunity that may be relevant to eligible public institutions and schools, but it does not establish a healthcare technology or clinical-services use case. N9+ Fit Score: 0/100. QC Healthcare Fit: 0/100. Dr. Miltie, LLC is not an eligible direct applicant because for-profit organizations are excluded. The mandatory 25% match must be satisfied by an eligible applicant and is not waived by Atlas.
