Opportunity Overview
Clean Water for Georgia Kids™ is a Georgia Department of Education program operated with RTI International and supported by an EPA Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation grant. Georgia public schools and licensed child care programs can enroll for free lead testing of drinking and cooking water, receive laboratory results and mitigation guidance, and may qualify for grant-funded mitigation support.
Funding and Support
Testing is free for participating Georgia public schools and licensed child care programs. The current program materials do not publish a total remaining funding amount or universal per-facility award ceiling.
On September 11, 2026, GaDOE announced that free replacement plumbing products are now available to school districts with a Capital Outlay Project Low Wealth Designation when lead-testing results are above the state action level. The program FAQ also describes a mitigation pilot that can provide eligible facilities with certified lead-free faucet fixtures, filters certified to remove lead, or partial reimbursement. Labor costs are not reimbursed.
Eligibility
The testing program is open to Georgia public schools and licensed child care programs. For the newly announced district mitigation support, GaDOE specifically identifies districts with a Capital Outlay Project Low Wealth Designation and results above the state action level. The program identifies the action level as 15 parts per billion (ppb). Facilities with results at or above 15 ppb are notified regarding mitigation-support eligibility.
Deadline and Availability
The current official materials describe enrollment and mitigation support as available now and do not publish a fixed closing date, deadline time, or time zone. Because mitigation resources are grant-funded and availability may depend on remaining resources, eligible facilities should enroll and complete testing promptly.
How to Participate
Facilities complete the program’s pre-enrollment training and enroll online. The program then mails a testing kit with sample bottles and prepaid return shipping. Participating facilities collect samples from drinking and cooking taps, return them for laboratory analysis, and receive results and mitigation recommendations. Facilities at or above the action level receive additional follow-up and information about available mitigation support.
Material Restrictions
This is not a general-purpose cash grant. The mitigation support described by the program is tied to lead-remediation needs and qualifying test results. The program describes support for certified lead-free fixtures and lead-removal filters, and the FAQ states that labor costs are not reimbursed. The federally supported testing program also requires public reporting of facility name, address, tap-level test results, test date, and mitigation actions.
