Sun Family Foundation — 2026 Humble Leadership Award for Orange County Nonprofits
Sun Family Foundation is inviting applications from small, community-rooted nonprofits based in and serving Orange County, California for the 2026 Humble Leadership Award. The award recognizes nonprofits whose work reflects authentic community trust, listening, shared power and accountable leadership. Applications are open October 12–December 11, 2026 and are due Friday, December 11, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time (PT).
Individual grant funding
Each selected organization will receive a one-time, unrestricted $25,000 grant. The funder plans to select up to 40 organizations, making up to $1,000,000 available across the entire award initiative. The $1 million is the overall program maximum, not an individual award. Funds can support the recipient’s charitable operations and work, without a detailed project budget or restricted spending plan. A standard mandatory matching contribution or reimbursement arrangement is not stated by the funder; grant payments are planned for the first quarter of 2027, with a stated goal of distribution by the end of February.
Who can apply
Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) public charities or fiscally sponsored projects with a qualifying 501(c)(3) sponsor; be located in Orange County and primarily serve Orange County residents; have an annual operating budget of $1,000,000 or less; and not have received direct Sun Family Foundation funding in the prior three years. Organizations merely serving Orange County but headquartered outside the county are not eligible. Fiscally sponsored applicants need written sponsor authorization and verification of their sponsor’s IRS status.
Ineligible applicants include 501(c)(4) organizations, political organizations or lobbying groups, organizations seeking capital/equipment funding, and organizations with specified conflicts of interest involving their senior leaders or board members and the foundation’s staff, family, board, donors or vendors. Government entities, schools and faith-based applicants should confirm that they meet charitable/fiscal-sponsorship and community-benefit criteria before applying; they are not categorically guaranteed eligibility.
Selection focus and application
Reviewers emphasize six qualities: community-centered leadership, authentic community connection, demonstrated trust, a credible vision for change, commitment to learning and shared knowledge, and underrecognized community work. Strong writing or a professional grant writer is not required. Apply through the official foundation award page and its linked Submittable application. The application requests basic organizational details (including EIN or fiscal-sponsor information), approximate operating budget, and brief narratives on leadership and community impact; no complex logic model or formal proposal is required. The foundation estimates 45–60 minutes to apply. Submitted applications cannot be edited afterward, so review before clicking Submit.
Informational sessions are scheduled for October 20 and November 12, 2026. Selection and grant distribution are anticipated in the first quarter of 2027. Successful recipients may be asked for a brief learning reflection, not a lengthy formal performance report.
