Atlas Analysis

VERIFICATION HOLD 2026-11-02. The funder official page https://nwmf.org/grants-scholarships/grants/ confirms November 2-November 30 current Building Better Lives round, but its controlling grant guidelines link now points to an October 2026 DOCX at https://nwmf.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/New-NMF-BBLG-Guidelines.docx . This revised document could not be retrieved through the available online readers. The earlier March 2026 BBLG-Guidelines.pdf and FAQs inform research but do not establish that every current-cycle eligibility, fund restrictions, event cap, documentation and application condition remains unchanged. The record remains PENDING REVIEW; do not call it fully source verified or submit protected approval until the October guide is read and reconciled. Typical amount $5,000-$15,000 is historical/typical, not a binding current applicant ceiling; no program-pool amount should be substituted.

Northwest Minnesota Foundation Building Better Lives: November 2026 Grant Round

Applications are open November 2 through November 30, 2026, with online submissions due by 11:59 p.m. on November 30. The official materials do not expressly specify a deadline time zone. The Northwest Minnesota Foundation (NMF) supports community-led projects addressing family stability, mental or physical health and wellness, welcoming communities, economic mobility and workforce development, and nonprofit capacity building.

Applicant Funding

Typical awards are $5,000 to $15,000, not a guaranteed minimum or a published maximum. The funder has not published a generally binding individual-applicant maximum for this November round. Annual or one-time events are capped at $5,000. Awards ordinarily support a one-year project. Earlier published total program funding figures should not be interpreted as an individual award limit or a confirmed November allocation.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, Tribal organizations, local governments, public agencies and other verifiable tax-exempt entities physically located in or serving NMF’s northwest Minnesota region. The region includes the Red Lake Nation and White Earth Nation and the counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau. Organizations headquartered outside the region may qualify for projects serving these communities. Formal tax-exempt fiscal sponsorship may be considered with a signed agreement; for-profit entities are ineligible even with a fiscal sponsor. Private religious schools may be eligible for nonreligious programming.

Eligible Uses and Restrictions

Qualifying community services and improvements may include housing, food, transportation, childcare, elder care, health and wellness access, workforce development, community participation, staff and board training and technology-related nonprofit capacity building. Eligible expenses may include program wages and benefits, necessary equipment, travel, supplies, consultants, staff training and feasibility studies, subject to funder review. Indirect or administrative costs may not exceed 10% of the grant. No subgranting or sponsorships. Capital campaigns and capital expenditures, partisan political or religious activities, discriminatory programs, previously incurred expenses, past debts, legal fees and financial audits are excluded. The guidelines identify some equipment as eligible but bar capital expenses; applicants should obtain clarification for any expensive equipment or capital-like purchase.

No matching contribution is required. Only one application per organization is accepted in each round, including partnership projects (one lead applicant). Signed memoranda of understanding with partners are not generally required, but partnership duties must be explained. The grantee must directly carry out the work or use a recognized fiscal host and file a final report within one year of receiving funds.

Application and Required Materials

Applicants must register and submit through the official NMF Web Portal. New portal accounts may require manual approval that takes up to 24 hours or one business day. Prepare an organizational contact and EIN, proof of nonprofit or Tribal/government tax-exempt status, signed W-9, complete proposed budget using the NMF template, project narrative describing community need, activities, accessibility, participation, partners, anticipated results and sustainability, plus a fiscal sponsorship agreement when applicable. Letters of support are optional. Fund decisions are scheduled by December 31, 2026 with disbursement expected January 2027.
