Stanford University 2026 RAISE Health Seed Grants
Applications are open November 2, 2026 through January 19, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. RAISE Health, a joint initiative of Stanford Medicine and Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, invites proposals that advance responsible, safe and equitable artificial intelligence in medicine and healthcare. Stanford expects to make approximately five one-year seed grants of up to $100,000 per individual project. This is a university-restricted research and education funding opportunity, not a nationwide open grant for external hospitals or nonprofits.
Eligibility and focus
Only Stanford affiliates qualify. Principal investigators and co-investigators must be Stanford faculty members eligible to serve as principal investigators under Stanford policy; the university identifies Academic Council and University Center Line faculty eligibility. Projects may research fair healthcare algorithms, patient safety, evaluation methods, ethical or legal challenges of AI in medicine, or educational approaches helping patients, clinicians and researchers use AI responsibly. Proposals are assessed for innovation, relevance, feasibility, interdisciplinary contribution, team qualifications, sustainability and potential impact.
Funding, allowed costs and restrictions
Each proposal may request up to $100,000 over 12 months; approximately five grants are anticipated, but individual awards are competitive and not guaranteed. Stanford applies an 8% infrastructure charge to direct costs: its illustrative $100,000 budget makes approximately $92,593 available for direct costs and $7,407 for the infrastructure charge. Eligible costs include project-related faculty or trainee salary and tuition, research staff, materials, minor equipment, prototyping, imaging, participant costs, and directly related travel. General administrative staffing, external consultants, contractors and subawards are prohibited except in limited circumstances with advance permission. The official call does not publish a universal mandatory matching contribution.
Required proposal and review
Submit one proposal of no more than four single-spaced pages, using 11-point type and one-inch margins. Page 1 provides the project cover and investigators; pages 2–3 provide the problem, innovative multidisciplinary approach, prior findings if any, 3–5 milestones with expected dates, and project budget with justification. Page 4 is a one-page Ethics and Society Review (ESR) statement, prepared using the instructions and template linked from the official call. Selected projects undergo ethics and society review. Awardees must share results at RAISE Health events or in publications and submit a 12-month research progress report covering outputs, funds and dissemination.
