Opportunity Overview
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) administers the federally funded Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), which reimburses eligible participating institutions for nutritious meals and snacks served to qualifying children and adults in care. MDE’s current grants page lists CACFP as open, with applications continuing throughout the year.
Eligible Settings
MDE identifies participating or potentially eligible settings that include licensed child-care centers, Head Start and Great Start Readiness programs, public and nonpublic schools, afterschool care programs, emergency shelters serving children experiencing homelessness, family child-care homes and relative-care providers, qualifying private child-care centers, and adult day-service programs. Final eligibility and sponsor status are controlled by MDE and USDA program rules.
Application and Timing
MDE currently lists CACFP as a federal grant program with applications continuing throughout the year. No fixed statewide closing date, clock time, or time zone is published for the rolling application pathway.
For new participants, MDE’s 2026 application guide states that the application is web-based and requires prerequisite registration and readiness steps before the CACFP application is accessed. MDE instructs prospective applicants to email MDE-CACFP@Michigan.gov with the number of locations they plan to apply for and whether the organization is nonprofit or for-profit. The process includes prequalification when required, SIGMA registration, a Unique Entity Identifier, Education Entity Master setup, MiLogin for Business, NexSys access, required training, and completion of the Child Nutrition Coordinated Application. MDE notes that prequalification is not required for National School Lunch Program sponsors and may be waived for organizations already participating in another Child Nutrition Program.
Funding Structure
CACFP is a federal reimbursement program rather than a conventional fixed-award grant. Current MDE public materials do not publish a universal applicant-level award ceiling. Reimbursement depends on approved participation, eligible meals and snacks, applicable reimbursement rules, and required records.
Atlas Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 64/100. CACFP is a durable Michigan child-health, school-nutrition and adult-care funding pathway with rolling access and broad provider relevance.
N9+ Fit Score: 0/100. The verified funding purpose is meal and snack reimbursement, not telehealth, remote physical examination, connected diagnostics or clinical-device procurement. Dr. Miltie, LLC is not treated as a direct prime applicant for this nutrition reimbursement program, and Atlas should not force an N9+ or QC Healthcare use case.
Required Next Action
Prospective Michigan sponsors should contact MDE-CACFP@Michigan.gov, confirm the correct sponsor category and any prequalification waiver, complete the required registration and training prerequisites, and submit the current NexSys Child Nutrition Coordinated Application. Applicants should use MDE’s current CACFP instructions and USDA requirements as controlling guidance.
