Opportunity Overview
Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is accepting applications for its 2026 Early Care & Education Grant Program. The program supports projects that improve the quality and accessibility of early learning environments for children from birth to age five across SMIF’s 20-county region and the Prairie Island Indian Community.
Funding
SMIF expects to award approximately $200,000 total, with individual project requests of up to $20,000. Projects must be completed within one year of the award date. The reviewed guidelines do not state a mandatory applicant match or cost-share requirement.
Eligible Applicants and Geography
Eligible applicants include independent IRS-designated 501(c)(3) organizations, public institutions, and units or agencies of local, state, federal, or Tribal government with relevant experience in childcare or early childhood learning services within the SMIF region. Applicants must be in good standing with applicable licensing and regulatory requirements. Projects must serve communities in SMIF’s 20-county region or the Prairie Island Indian Community.
Eligible and Ineligible Uses
Examples include equity-centered access projects, educator professional development, curriculum and instructional quality, curriculum-related or integrated equipment, family partnership and engagement, and wellbeing or mental-health initiatives. General operating expenses including salaries and personnel, capital campaigns, and endowments are excluded.
Application Requirements
Required materials include the completed online application, an IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter when applicable, and the Project Budget Worksheet. Applications are submitted through SMIF’s GoApply online grant system.
Deadline
Applications are due October 6, 2026. SMIF states that staff are available for questions until 4:30 p.m. on October 6, but the reviewed materials do not expressly state that 4:30 p.m. is the submission cutoff and do not publish a deadline time zone. Atlas therefore does not infer an exact cutoff time.
