Washington Behavioral Health Facilities Closure Prevention Funding
The Washington State Department of Commerce is currently accepting applications for capital projects that prevent the closure of existing behavioral health facilities. Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted.
Funding
Commerce’s October 23, 2026 announcement identifies $9.7 million available for this 2025-27 capital funding round. Funding requests cannot exceed $9.7 million. This is the announced funding pool and request limit, not a guaranteed individual applicant award; actual awards depend on eligibility, qualified costs, and remaining funds.
Deadline
Applications opened October 23, 2026 and are accepted first-come, first-served until June 30, 2027, at midnight, or until funds are exhausted earlier. The official opportunity page does not specify the time zone for the stated midnight cutoff. Eligible projects must expend grant funds by June 30, 2027.
Who may be eligible
The current Commerce notice identifies eligible applicants as nonprofits, for-profit businesses, public entities, Tribes, Indian Health Care Providers, community hospitals, and community-based behavioral health providers. Facilities must be licensed and operating and preserve behavioral health services for publicly funded patients. Applicants must show that without state investment their facility is at significant risk of closing within two years. Prior BHF grantees may apply only after fulfilling their existing contractual commitment term.
Purpose and allowable project direction
Funds support physical repairs, capital maintenance and upgrades needed to preserve existing behavioral health services, including work necessary for compliance with licensing standards. Expansion is not eligible. Awardees must maintain the contracted use of facilities for at least 10 years.
