Eligibility and Project Readiness
Eligible applicants are qualifying 501(c)(3) public charities aligned with a Yawkey Foundation Area of Giving and geographic priorities, including organizations providing direct services in Eastern Massachusetts and Georgetown County, South Carolina, subject to the Foundation’s full guidelines and eligibility quiz. Public entities and several other entity/request types are ineligible. Organizations new to the Foundation generally should have an annual operating budget of at least $500,000.
The Foundation describes the strongest Transformational Capital proposals as having validated project need and viability, strong board commitment and a board-approved plan, community support, progress toward key regulatory benchmarks, and at least 70% of total project costs pledged or received. This is a competitive project-readiness benchmark, not a separately stated mandatory match percentage.
Submission Requirements
Applicants begin through the Yawkey Foundation’s online eligibility and Initial Proposal process. The Foundation states that Initial Proposals should be no more than 800 words and must be accompanied by a detailed project or program budget specific to the request. A nonprofit may submit only one Initial Proposal to the Yawkey Foundation in a calendar year, regardless of grant type. The Foundation estimates approximately 12 to 18 months to review Transformational Capital Initial Proposals before deciding which organizations may be invited to a full application.
