Rasmuson Foundation Tier 2 Grants are the Foundation’s current large-grant program for Alaska capital projects, programs of strategic importance, and innovative solutions to issues of community or statewide importance.
Funding: Tier 2 awards are more than $35,000. The current official Tier 2 page does not publish an upper award cap, so Atlas does not infer one.
Deadline: Letters of Inquiry are accepted year round and reviewed twice each year. Selected organizations are invited to submit a full proposal. Tier 2 requests are considered by the Foundation’s Board of Directors in June and December, and the full process can take six to twelve months depending on project readiness and applicant responsiveness.
Eligibility: Eligible organizations must be actively working in Alaska and generally be an established 501(c)(3) public charity, a local government, or a Tribal government. Qualifying faith-based organizations may be eligible when the project has broad community impact. Nonprofits must have held 501(c)(3) status for at least one year and have at least one completed fiscal year of financial statements available. Individuals are ineligible.
Eligible projects and costs: The Foundation identifies construction, renovation, furnishings, buildings, equipment, vehicles, historic preservation, pilot projects, program expansion, and some types of match funding as examples of eligible Tier 2 work. Applicants should include labor, shipping, installation, pre-development, and other project costs in the full project budget. Healthcare equipment may therefore be a legitimate applicant-led project component when it is necessary to an eligible Alaska project and accepted by the Foundation.
Important exclusions: The Foundation generally does not fund projects associated with core government functions such as roads, utilities, public safety, or K-12 education; deficits or debt reduction; endowments or scholarships; fundraising events or sponsorships; or reimbursement for items already purchased.
Match and other funding: The current Tier 2 page does not publish a fixed mandatory match percentage. However, eligible projects generally require multiple funding sources, and strong proposals show meaningful community financial support, other grants, business or individual contributions, or organizational savings. Applicants are encouraged to secure some or most of the needed project funding before applying.
Application process: Prospective applicants are encouraged to speak with a Rasmuson Foundation program officer before submitting a Letter of Inquiry. Selected organizations are invited to a full proposal. Large projects may require pro formas, building plans, and other supporting materials. Site visits are required for Tier 2 proposals and typically include key staff and board members.
