The NIH Common Fund is accepting applications for RFA-RM-27-014, Validation Center for Precision Medicine with AI: Integrating Imaging with Multimodal Data (PRIMED-AI).
Funding: NIH anticipates one award. Application budgets are limited to $2,000,000 in direct costs for the first year and up to $3,200,000 in direct costs for each of the remaining four years. The maximum project period is five years.
Deadline: applications are due October 2, 2026 at 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization. The NOFO opened September 2, 2026.
Purpose: the Validation Center will independently evaluate and characterize AI-enabled, image-based, multimodal clinical decision-support tools developed by the PRIMED-AI Consortium. Core work includes verification, validation, benchmarking, interoperability, uncertainty quantification, clinical translation, regulatory-aligned validation guidance, and a fast-track function for unmet clinical and data-science needs.
Eligibility: domestic higher education institutions, nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal organizations, small businesses, and other for-profit organizations may apply. Foreign organizations and foreign components are not eligible. A multi-PD/PI application is required. Cost sharing is not required.
Atlas assessment: provisional N9+ Fit Score 68/100 and Atlas Opportunity Score 82/100. N9+ could be relevant as a connected-health and remote-examination data source, interoperability test case, or validation partner in a larger imaging-centered multimodal AI ecosystem. The award is designed for a major independent validation center, not routine device procurement, so Dr. Miltie should be viewed primarily as a potential technology or industry collaborator unless the required center-scale scientific and operational capabilities are independently verified.
