Funding Opportunity Number: PAR-24-127
Issuing agency: National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
Application deadline: September 29, 2026 at 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization.
Funding: NIDCD will not accept applications requesting $499,999 or more in direct costs in any year, so annual direct-cost requests must remain below $499,999. The maximum project period is five years. Administrative costs may not exceed $20,000 per year. Medical-student supplementary research/training costs may be requested up to $4,200 per student, and Resident-Investigator supplementary research funds may be requested up to $20,000 per year per resident. Cost sharing is not required.
Purpose: This R25 supports institutional research-education pathways that provide otolaryngology residents and medical students with mentored research experiences and career-development opportunities designed to strengthen the pipeline of clinician-scientists conducting research within the NIDCD mission.
Institutional and program requirements: A competitive sponsoring institution must have the otolaryngology residency, research-education environment, mentors, clinical and scientific resources, and institutional commitment necessary to operate the pathway. The PD/PI must hold an appropriate full-time appointment at the applicant institution, normally possess a health-professional degree, have a clinical-department appointment, demonstrate mentoring experience, and have a strong record of recent NIH-supported research. Resident-Investigators must be full-time at the applicant institution and devote at least 80 percent effort to research during the designated research blocks, with research experiences generally spanning 12 to 24 months.
Eligibility: Eligible domestic applicant organizations include the standard NIH categories specified in the announcement, including institutions of higher education, nonprofits, small businesses and other for-profit organizations, state and local governments, Tribal governments and organizations, independent school districts, eligible federal agencies, public and Indian housing authorities, faith-based and community-based organizations, and regional organizations. Foreign organizations and foreign components are not eligible. Structural organization-type eligibility does not replace the requirement for the sponsoring institution to possess the necessary otolaryngology residency and research-education infrastructure.
Submission: Applications may be submitted through NIH ASSIST, an institutional system-to-system solution, or Grants.gov Workspace and are tracked through eRA Commons. Active SAM.gov/UEI, Grants.gov, and eRA Commons registrations are required. Applicants are requested to notify NIDCD after application submission as described in the announcement.
Atlas assessment: Strong fit for academic medical centers and teaching institutions with established otolaryngology residency programs and clinician-scientist mentoring infrastructure. Recommended posture: Partner-Led / Otolaryngology Residency Research Education Program. Dr. Miltie should not be treated as a direct-prime candidate absent a qualifying sponsoring institution, residency program, PD/PI, mentors, participant structure, and institutional research environment.
Atlas score: 92/100.
