Required next actionConfirm that the proposed platform or technology fits the R33 scope, has supportive preliminary data, and is ready for rigorous HLBS-relevant validation; verify applicant eligibility, key personnel, and required registrations; then submit by October 21, 2026 at 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization.
Broad Eligibility
Domestic small businesses and other for-profits, higher education institutions, nonprofits, state/local governments, independent school districts, tribal entities, and other listed organization types may apply. Required registrations include SAM/UEI, Grants.gov, and eRA Commons. Foreign organizations are not eligible. No cost sharing is required.
Atlas Analysis
NIH/NHLBI's Catalyze R33 opportunity supports rigorous validation of transformative, multi-use platforms or technologies relevant to heart, lung, blood, and sleep diseases or disorders. Well-suited projects should have major feasibility gaps already overcome with supportive preliminary data but still require development and rigorous validation to establish repeatable, reliable performance in an HLBS-relevant context. This is a research-development opportunity rather than a general equipment-purchase or routine clinical-deployment grant.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH, is accepting R33 applications under RFA-HL-26-016, Catalyze: Enabling Technologies and Transformative Platforms for HLBS Research. The program supports further development and rigorous validation of transformative, multi-use technologies or platforms relevant to heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.
Next deadline: October 21, 2026 at 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization. Assistance Listings are 93.837, 93.838, 93.839, and 93.233.
Funding: Application budgets may not exceed $350,000 in direct costs per year, with a maximum project period of two years. NHLBI expects up to four new awards in each of FY2026, FY2027, and FY2028, for up to 12 awards overall. Cost sharing is not required.
Eligibility: Eligible domestic applicants include small businesses and other for-profit organizations, public and private institutions of higher education, nonprofits, state and local governments, independent school districts, tribal entities, and other listed organization types. Applicants must maintain the required SAM/UEI, Grants.gov, and eRA Commons registrations.
Atlas fit: Moderate to high, but technically conditional. The NOFO explicitly includes instrumentation, devices, non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring technologies, and point-of-care technologies. It requires a genuinely novel or transformative platform capability, supportive preliminary data, and further development or rigorous validation. Clinical trials are not allowed. A simple deployment of the existing Nonagon N9+ or an efficacy study where the novelty is only the disease target would not be responsive.
The strongest N9+ pathway would be a defensible device-level or platform-development project that adds and validates a novel, broadly useful remote-examination, physiologic-data, or point-of-care capability relevant to HLBS research. Dr. Miltie is within an eligible for-profit applicant class, but any direct pursuit should advance only after the required technical novelty, preliminary data, research team, and milestone-driven validation plan are independently verified.
