Eligible organizations and applicants

Funding is intended for Manhattan-based eligible nonprofit organizations with an artistic mission or history of arts programming, as well as eligible artists and other grant recipients under the funding-partner rules. The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs funding source limits nonprofit operating budgets to under $100,000 and excludes organizations receiving funding directly from that agency. The NYSCA community regrant pathway permits qualifying nonprofit organizations with operating budgets of any size that cannot apply to or receive NYSCA directly. Required organizational records include appropriate IRS 501(c)(3) documentation, financial statement, and current New York State Charities Bureau filing as applicable. Certain New York State-chartered educational institutions and government or quasi-governmental agencies based in Manhattan may qualify under NYSCA-only conditions; ordinary public/private schools and public colleges are excluded from the chartered-institution pathway.

Individual artists, collectives, and sponsored applicants may qualify under separate requirements. Individuals must be at least age 18 and not enrolled in a full-time degree program. Proof of Manhattan address or residence is normally required; partner-specific documented exceptions and fiscal-sponsorship conditions are described in the full official program guidelines. The chosen grant recipient cannot be changed after application submission.

Project requirements and allowable costs

Applicants must confirm and pay at least one teaching artist, deliver at least three sequential contact sessions with the same teaching artist and participant group, and conclude with a public event in Manhattan. Programs should take place in accessible Manhattan community-based sites such as older adult centers, recreation centers, public libraries, or community centers. Applications require arts learning objectives, lessons and a curriculum, program budget, teaching artist credentials, and one mandatory past-work sample (a second optional). The funder prioritizes authentic skill-building and creative work, not standalone recreation, social service, therapeutic or rehabilitation services.

Prohibited uses include general operating support, unrelated administration, facilities payments, capital equipment, purchase of artwork, lobbying, entertainment receptions or fundraisers, and payments or scholarships to students or non-professionals. Former Creative Learning grantees must clear outstanding final reports and may not receive this award for four consecutive years. The guidelines do not impose a single universal applicant matching percentage; the request is based on eligible project expenses and secured income. A final report is due within 30 days following the funded public event.

Before applying, review the LMCC Creative Learning 2027 program page and FAQs, its ten-page governing guidelines, and the seventeen-page application-question preview. The official current guidelines control which partner sources and recipient types are eligible; do not assume every organization type or fiscal sponsor qualifies for both agencies. Only one 2027 Manhattan Arts Grants program track may be chosen per applicant.
