LMCC 2027 Creative Engagement Project Grants

Application period: September 8–November 12, 2026. Deadline: Thursday, November 12, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) invites eligible Manhattan-based artists, collectives, and nonprofit arts or community organizations to apply for $1,000–$20,000 in project-specific support for public arts presentations occurring January 1–December 31, 2027. These are individual applicant request amounts, not an overall funder allocation; the full request is not guaranteed.

Program purpose and project eligibility

Supported work includes public concerts, performances, exhibitions, public art, readings, film screenings, festivals, and similar arts presentations in Manhattan. Projects must present finished or complete creative work to the public, include at least one confirmed professional artist in a leading or significant creative role, and budget payment to participating professional artists. Creative Engagement is not general operating support and is not primarily an arts training, social services, therapy, religious, or recreational grant. The same application platform serves both Creative Engagement and UMEZ Arts Engagement, but applicants may choose only one LMCC project-based program track per cycle; funding partner eligibility is determined from application responses.

Eligible grant recipients

Applicants generally must have a Manhattan address or residency and an eligible public arts project in Manhattan. Qualifying nonprofit organizations need a core artistic mission or established arts programming history. Funding-source restrictions vary: the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) nonprofit pathway requires an operating budget under $100,000 and no direct DCLA funding; the Howard Gilman Foundation pathway is limited to eligible performing-arts nonprofits with budgets under $250,000 that do not receive funds directly from that foundation; the NYSCA regrant pathway may include eligible nonprofit budgets of any size where the applicant cannot apply to or receive NYSCA directly. Certain NYS-chartered institutions or government entities are eligible only under the applicable NYSCA conditions. Individuals and collectives may be eligible, including through qualifying fiscal-sponsorship arrangements; individuals must be at least 18 and not full-time degree students. Applicants must follow the controlling guidelines for their recipient and funding-partner category. General public/private K–12 schools and public colleges are not eligible as NYS-chartered-education recipients.

Funding conditions and prohibited uses

Allowable project expenditures must directly support the 2027 Manhattan arts presentation, such as professional artist fees, approved production materials, and project-specific planning. General operations, unrelated administration, facility payments, capital equipment and works-of-art purchases, scholarships or awards to nonprofessional students or minors, lobbying, and fundraising receptions or entertainment costs are not eligible. The program specifies no universal percentage matching requirement: the requested amount is informed by eligible project expenses minus secured project income. Previously funded Creative Engagement recipients may receive support a maximum of three consecutive years before sitting out one cycle, and outstanding reports must be resolved by January 31, 2027. Applicants planning early-2027 presentations may need upfront financing because award funds are available later.

Submission instructions

Begin at the official LMCC Submittable portal and complete its eligibility quiz. Prepare a project summary and narrative, artistic work sample (one required; second optional), creative team and project schedule, public-access plan, project budget entered in the online table, and proof of Manhattan address. Depending on funding source and recipient category, provide nonprofit determination letter, financial information, NYS Charities Bureau filing proof, sponsorship agreement, and required institution/agency authorization. Do not assume that applying for one funder or another means that all eligibility pathways are interchangeable. LMCC announces funding decisions in April 2027.
