The NEH Division of Research is accepting applications for Scholarly Editions and Translations. The program supports collaborative teams that edit, annotate, and translate foundational humanities texts that are important to scholarship but are not available in adequate editions or translations. The 2026 competition is limited to projects on American history and culture or Western civilization.
Funding: Approximately $5,000,000 is anticipated for about 20 grants. Planning awards are up to $65,000. Implementation awards may receive up to $300,000 in outright funds, with up to an additional $150,000 in federal matching funds for a maximum of $450,000. Rare Chairman’s Special Awards in American History and Culture may reach $1,000,000. Cost sharing is not required unless the applicant requests federal matching funds.
Eligible applicants: 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, accredited public or nonprofit institutions of higher education, state and local governments and their agencies, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. At least two scholars must collaborate on the proposed project.
Eligible work may include planning or implementation of print or digital scholarly editions and translations with new scholarly introductions, annotations, critical apparatus, and related research. Translation projects must translate into English. Applicants should review the current NOFO for all required application components, formatting rules, restrictions, and Grants.gov submission instructions.
