The 2026-27 competition is limited to projects focused on American history or culture or Western civilization.
Funding: Approximately $2,500,000 is available for an estimated 15 awards. Depending on the funding category, awards may be up to $250,000. Planning International Collaboration projects may request up to $50,000; Manuscript Preparation and Scholarly Digital Project categories may request up to $250,000.
Eligible applicants: U.S.-established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, accredited public or nonprofit institutions of higher education, state and local governments and their agencies, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. The scholarly work must be genuinely collaborative and conducted by a team of two or more scholars.
Supported activities include collaborative manuscript preparation, scholarly digital projects grounded in humanities research and interpretation, and planning for international scholarly collaborations. Applicants should review the current NEH program guidance and Grants.gov package for all required application components, formatting rules, restrictions, and submission instructions.
Atlas note: This opportunity is best suited to eligible higher education, nonprofit, government, and Tribal organizations with established humanities research capacity. Because the deadline is inside the 48-hour new-outreach cutoff, Atlas publication is for accurate federal coverage and deadline monitoring only; do not initiate new applicant outreach.
