Opportunity Overview
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Office of Rural Health currently accepts applications for the Nebraska Loan Repayment Program (NLRP), a rural and underserved health-workforce incentive for qualifying clinicians who agree to serve at eligible Nebraska shortage-area sites.
Award
Doctors and dentists may receive up to $60,000 per year for three years, or $180,000 total. Other qualifying professions may receive up to $30,000 per year for three years, or $90,000 total, limited by eligible educational debt and program requirements. A special pathway for qualifying mental-health professionals serving community-supervision populations may repay the provider’s entire qualifying student-loan balance over a five-year service period, subject to the current rules and required local match.
Who Is Eligible
Current Nebraska DHHS guidance covers qualifying physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, BSN registered nurses, certified registered nurse anesthetists, dental hygienists, clinical psychologists, licensed mental-health professionals, qualifying alcohol-and-drug counselors or clinical social workers, registered dietitian nutritionists, pharmacists, occupational therapists and physical therapists, subject to discipline-specific shortage-area and site requirements. State of Nebraska employees are not eligible.
Match Requirement
The program generally uses a 50/50 local match. The health professional cannot provide their own matching funds. The employer or another qualifying local entity in the designated shortage area must provide the local share and participate in the application and work-verification process.
Deadline
Nebraska DHHS publishes no fixed closing date on its current FAQ. The Office of Rural Health states that it currently accepts applications for the loan repayment programs and assesses applications as they come in. Funding and eligibility should be reconfirmed immediately before filing.
Strategic Value
Atlas Opportunity Score: 93/100. NLRP is a substantial rural recruitment and retention incentive that can strengthen staffing at eligible Nebraska hospitals, clinics, dental sites, behavioral-health organizations and other qualifying facilities.
N9+ Direct Vendor Fit: 0/100. This program repays clinicians’ educational debt. It does not provide a separate technology, telehealth-equipment or medical-device purchasing award. Nebraska DHHS permits up to 50% telehealth under the state program when all other requirements are met, but that does not establish N9+ purchase eligibility.
Application Strategy
The health professional initiates the application after employment is lined up at an eligible site; the employer or local entity completes the local portion and provides the required match. Atlas should not advance any matched submission without approval or an applicable waiver. Verify current discipline, shortage-area, site, loan and service-obligation rules before submission.
