Atlas Analysis

Official Art Preservation Fund grant guidelines reviewed October 27, 2026. Track B awards up to $5,000 for professional condition assessment, conservation treatment scoping and cost estimates; it does not pay for treatment itself. Applicants need nonprofit status or eligible fiscal sponsorship, at least 1.0 FTE paid staffing, annual operating budgets under $5 million, documented collection stewardship and public cultural or historic benefit. A conservator need not be selected before application. The project period is generally three months, beginning January 2027; no matching funds are required. Awards cover limited assessment costs, necessary travel, documentation and allowable indirect expenses. Applicants agree to provide an assessment and a brief reflection. Later Track A funding is possible but not automatic or guaranteed.

Art Preservation Fund 2026 Demonstration Fund – Track B: Assessment-to-Treatment Bridge

Art Preservation Fund Track B offers competitive applicant grants for cultural organizations that need a qualified conservation or preservation professional to assess the condition of significant collection items and develop a credible treatment scope, cost estimate, and implementation plan. Track B is an assessment and readiness award: it does not fund the treatment itself.

Individual award maximum: $5,000. Approximately eight to ten awards are anticipated. Deadline: October 30, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (5:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time). The assessment project period is generally three months, beginning January 2027. No mandatory cash or in-kind match is required; up to 10% indirect costs are allowable.

Applicants must be US-based 501(c)(3) organizations or organizations with eligible fiscal sponsors; collections related to academic or government bodies may qualify through an eligible application entity. Applicants need at least 1.0 FTE paid staff, an annual operating budget under $5,000,000, stewardship or ownership permission for the collection items, and clear public cultural or historical benefit. Priority consideration includes rural, small-city, tribal-serving and under-resourced organizations.

Eligible requests cover conservation specialist condition assessments, treatment scope and cost estimates, direct assessment travel and documentation photography. General operating costs, unrelated digitization, acquisitions, private collections, major building repairs, and routine collections administration without a defined conservation outcome are ineligible. Applicants are not required to identify a conservator before applying: the funder offers professional matchmaking.

Recipients provide a written conservator assessment and treatment plan, along with a short project reflection. Successful Track B recipients may seek Track A treatment funding afterward, but Track A follow-on funding is not automatic or guaranteed. Applicants should review the full funder guidance and submit through the official application form on the source page; decisions are expected December 15, 2026.
