2027 AASLD Foundation Pinnacle Research Award in Liver Diseases

The Pinnacle Research Award in Liver Diseases provides $300,000 over three years ($100,000 annually) to a qualifying accredited nonprofit sponsoring institution in the United States, Canada or Mexico for an early-career scientist’s basic science liver research. This is the individual applicant award, not the total foundation research pool. Full applications are due December 7, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The funding term is July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2030, paid at $25,000 per quarter; annual continuation depends on progress and financial reporting and sustained eligibility.

Eligibility

Researchers must be in the first five years following their first faculty appointment at the July 1, 2027 award start (first appointment no earlier than July 1, 2022, including foreign institutions). Candidates still awaiting their first appointment can qualify if the department chair commits to an eligible faculty appointment by the grant start for the entire funding cycle. Applicants must be current AASLD members, commit at least 50% effort to the proposed project, and have an AASLD-member mentor or co-mentor in good standing. The host must be an accredited nonprofit healthcare or health-related research institution in the U.S., Canada or Mexico. NIH, CDC and FDA employees are ineligible. Comparable prior/current career-development salary awards may disqualify applicants; consult the official Foundation eligibility list. The program is intended for promising basic scientists, not established independent senior researchers. Limit one AASLD Foundation research-award application per investigator per year.

Eligible research and expenditures

Only basic science research relating to liver physiology and diseases qualifies for this category. Funding may support principal-investigator salary, technical support and laboratory supplies; capital equipment, indirect costs, conference-registration fees and most travel are excluded. A narrowly limited exception allows up to $2,000 for PI travel during year three to attend The Liver Meeting and deliver a research-progress presentation. The Foundation does not require or approve a detailed project budget for this category. Institutions must ensure funds support allowable expenses. Additional institutional support is expected, but the RFA does not specify a fixed universal matching percentage.
