AASLD Foundation 2027 Frank J. Tusa Pilot Award for Research in Hepatic Encephalopathy
The AASLD Foundation 2027 Frank J. Tusa Pilot Award for Research in Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) offers $50,000 to an eligible sponsoring nonprofit research institution for an original one-year project testing new interventions to improve outcomes for people living with liver-disease-related HE. Applicants must submit by December 7, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The grant runs July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2028.
Who may apply
Principal investigators must meet NIH early-stage-investigator criteria or hold a faculty position at or below Associate Professor, be an active American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) member, and commit at least 20% effort. Applicants below Associate Professor level need an AASLD-member mentor or co-mentor in good standing. The sponsoring institution must be an accredited public or private nonprofit health-related research institution in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. NIH, FDA, and CDC employees are ineligible. Existing federal-grant holders must establish that the project is distinct, non-overlapping and cannot be completed with those funds. Only one AASLD Foundation research-award application per individual per calendar year is permitted; up to one applicant per institutional department may be funded for this category.
Research scope and financial rules
Proposals should be innovative, hypothesis-based interventions to improve HE patient outcomes, with one or two achievable research aims during one year. Clinical, outcomes or translational projects should incorporate patient contact, patient clinical data or patient specimens as relevant. Routine extension of an existing funded project is ineligible. The $50,000 is the individual institutional award, not an overall funding pool. Funds are paid once at grant initiation. Direct project expenses are eligible, but equipment costing $5,000 or more requires Foundation approval in writing in advance. Indirect costs, registration fees and travel expenses are prohibited. No universal mandatory matching percentage is specified in the RFA. Unused funding must be returned.
