Opportunity Overview
The Mississippi Humanities Council is accepting applications for the 2027 cohort of Witness: The Freedom Memory Project. Between 2026 and 2028, MHC is partnering with four Mississippi communities per year to design and establish physical or virtual sites of memory reflecting local Civil Rights Movement history and the broader struggle for freedom in Mississippi.
Funding and Project Support
Each selected community receives direct project support from MHC and its project partners to carry out the community’s vision. The current official program page does not publish a fixed cash award amount, per-community ceiling, or required match. Selected communities are also encouraged to apply separately to MHC for grant support for public programs related to their site of memory.
Who Can Apply
Eligible applicants include community-based organizations, cultural institutions, schools, churches, grassroots groups, local governments, and other not-for-profit organizations in Mississippi. MHC especially encourages collaboration among organizations. Strong applications should demonstrate community support, local partnerships, and a clear vision for how the proposed site will educate and inspire.
Eligible Project Concepts
Projects may include public art installations or monuments, Mississippi Freedom Trail markers, exhibits or local archives, and digital storytelling or oral-history projects. The program is designed to surface local people, places and stories that are often absent from the national Civil Rights narrative.
Application and Deadline
Prospective applicants should review the current applicant materials and contact MHC Director of Strategic Initiatives John Spann and Program Officer MiMi Bishop to discuss the community’s idea before applying. The current official program page states that the 2027 application must be submitted by November 16, 2026. MHC does not publish a closing clock time or time zone on the controlling page, so Atlas does not infer one. The 2027 cohort is expected to be announced by January 2027.
Atlas Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 66/100. This is a legitimate Mississippi community and school-adjacent funding/support pathway with a current 2027 application window and clear eligible applicant classes. N9+ Fit Score: 0/100. QC Healthcare / Dr. Miltie direct-vendor fit: 0/100. The opportunity is centered on public history, education, cultural preservation and community memory rather than healthcare delivery, medical technology or clinical services. Atlas should not force a healthcare or device pathway into the project.
