Opportunity Overview
The Healthcare Initiative Foundation (HIF) has published its FY27 Fall Grant Cycle for Montgomery County, Maryland. HIF funds nonprofit organizations that provide healthcare and improve access to health services for underinsured, uninsured and low-income Montgomery County residents, with an explicit health-equity focus.
Current FY27 Timeline
The online grant portal is scheduled to open October 1, 2026 at 8:00 AM and the FY27 Fall application closes October 15, 2026 at 5:00 PM. HIF’s current page labels those times EST; applicants should follow the controlling portal clock and any later HIF update.
Application-eligibility gate: HIF states that all organizations interested in receiving grant funds must attend its annual training. FY27 Fall orientation sessions are scheduled for September 9, September 18 and September 24, 2026. Attendance at one session is required. The September 18 session will be recorded, and viewing that recording counts as attendance.
Who Can Apply
HIF considers grants to 501(c)(3) healthcare nonprofits based in Montgomery County, Maryland, or nonprofits with county-based health programs and activities. The Foundation generally considers new grants only after a site visit. First-time or prospective applicants should contact HIF with a short introduction to request consideration for a site visit.
HIF also evaluates regulatory good standing, financial sustainability, application quality, feasibility, prior compliance, required training and site-visit participation, the reasonableness of the requested amount, and the geographic area of Montgomery County to be served, including historically under-invested communities.
Funding Priorities
HIF’s FY26-FY27 strategic alignment emphasizes identifying and funding initiatives that address current and anticipated health disparities in Montgomery County and encouraging collaborations that improve and expand healthcare services. Its grant guidelines favor projects that start or grow strong health programs, improve the quality, accessibility or delivery of health and wellness services, replicate successful models, build organizational capacity and leverage partnerships or other resources.
The Foundation’s stated mission and recent grantmaking encompass healthcare access, behavioral health, care navigation, child and adolescent mental health, dental and primary care, vision services, chronic-disease support and healthcare workforce development.
Funding Amount
HIF’s current FY27 Fall cycle page does not publish a universal per-award ceiling or total FY27 Fall pool. Atlas therefore does not infer an award range. For context only, HIF reports that its FY26 grantmaking partnered with 39 organizations and awarded more than $1.15 million; that historical total does not establish the FY27 award size.
Important Exclusions
HIF does not fund endowments or annual campaigns, lobbying or political activities, grants to individuals, bricks-and-mortar capital expenses, replacement of government funding, or religious activities. It also excludes a nonprofit system or organization, including affiliates, that owns or operates an acute-care hospital in Montgomery County. Secular health programs operated by religious institutions may qualify.
Atlas Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 94/100. This is a strong, highly targeted Maryland healthcare-access opportunity for eligible Montgomery County nonprofits because HIF is a health-specific funder, the FY27 cycle and training dates are current, and the program explicitly prioritizes health disparities, access, service quality, organizational capacity and collaboration.
N9+ Direct Vendor Fit: 12/100 conditional. HIF supports healthcare-delivery innovation and organizational capacity but the current FY27 public guidance does not specifically establish connected clinical equipment, remote-exam hardware or telehealth procurement as an eligible cost. Bricks-and-mortar capital is expressly excluded. Any technology component should be applicant-led and confirmed with HIF before budgeting. QC Healthcare Fit: 20/100 conditional; direct healthcare access is central to the mission, but outsourced physician coverage is not specifically identified as a standard funding pathway.
Next Action
Eligible Montgomery County health nonprofits should register for and complete one of the required FY27 orientation sessions, confirm whether a site visit is needed, review the application materials in advance, prepare current financial and compliance documentation, and be ready to submit through HIF’s portal after it opens October 1 and before October 15, 2026 at 5:00 PM.
