Press Forward Maine Matching Challenge — Local News Day 2027
Press Forward Maine, an initiative housed at the Maine Community Foundation, is accepting applications from eligible Maine-serving local newsrooms for a competitive 2027 matching-grant pilot. Up to 14 newsrooms will be selected. Each can earn up to $10,000 in matching grant funds, at a two-to-one match for eligible individual contributions made during April 1–30, 2027. A newsroom must raise $5,000 in eligible contributions to earn the entire $10,000 match; smaller eligible contributions earn proportionally smaller matches. This is applicant-level matching support, not a guaranteed cash award or a program-wide funding pool.
Who may apply
Eligible applicants are Maine-serving 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organizations, locally owned and operated for-profit newsrooms, and public media organizations publishing original nonpartisan, non-advocacy public-service journalism at least twice a week. Each must have at least one local full-time-equivalent journalist, follow Society of Professional Journalists standards, and commit to training, campaign, and reporting activities. Newsrooms with annual budgets under $1 million receive priority; larger eligible outlets may apply. For-profit outlets need a nonprofit fiscal sponsor or partner to create the required shared Mightycause campaign profile.
Funding conditions and restrictions
Matched funds support general newsroom operations. The matching calculation applies to qualifying individual contributions during April 2027, including new individual donations, subscriptions, and memberships. Contributions from businesses, foundations, and organizations do not qualify toward the match. Only the first $1,000 from each individual donor is match-eligible. Selected outlets must attend training, participate in the April campaign, document eligible donations by May 14, 2027, and submit a final report by May 31. Fundraising and reporting requirements apply; this is not a no-match grant.
