Opportunity Overview
Open now. The James Graham Brown Foundation is accepting Letters of Interest for its Louisville Responsive Community Grants on a rolling basis through October 15, 2026 for the current review cycle. Health & Well-being is an expressly listed focus area, making this a relevant Kentucky healthcare and community-health funding pathway for qualifying Louisville Metro nonprofits.
Funding
Responsive grants generally range from $150,000-$500,000. The Foundation states that the amount requested from JGBF should typically not exceed 30% of the total project budget. Proposals showing that 50%-60% of total project cost has already been raised are described as more competitive, and JGBF rarely expects to be the sole funder.
Eligibility and Geography
The program is primarily for nonprofit organizations located in the Louisville Metro area. Organizations established within the last three years or with an annual operating budget below $300,000 are generally not eligible. Individual public or private pre-K-12 schools are generally ineligible, with rare exceptions. Organizations outside Louisville Metro are generally ineligible, also with rare exceptions.
Organizations with active JGBF grants or consecutive grants toward the same project are not eligible for this responsive program. Requests for ongoing operations or routine program costs are typically not eligible. Other exclusions include individuals, political entities, fundraising events, performing arts, and religious organizations seeking support for religious purposes.
Application Process
New organizations, or organizations that have not previously received a JGBF grant, must complete the Foundation’s Eligibility Questionnaire before submitting a Letter of Interest. Previous grantees may contact their program officer or submit the established-organization LOI. Organizations may submit one LOI per calendar year, and the applicant’s CEO must approve the LOI before submission.
For the current cycle, LOIs are accepted on a rolling basis through October 15, 2026. Applicants invited forward face a December 1, 2026 full-application deadline, with formal review and decision expected in February 2027. The Foundation does not publish a specific closing time or time zone for the October 15 LOI cutoff, so applicants should submit early.
Atlas Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 88/100. The opportunity offers substantial funding and explicitly includes Health & Well-being, but eligibility is geographically concentrated in Louisville Metro and the Foundation expects catalytic, sustainable projects with significant outside financial support rather than routine operating requests.
N9+ Fit: 16/100, conditional. The program does not identify remote physical-examination technology or medical devices as a preferred cost. N9+ should be considered only if a qualifying applicant has a legitimate Health & Well-being project in which the platform is demonstrably necessary, compliant with project-cost rules, and approved within the Foundation’s budget framework.
Dr. Miltie direct-applicant fit: 0/100. The responsive program is directed to qualifying nonprofit organizations. Dr. Miltie should not be advanced as the direct applicant under the verified eligibility rules.
Next Action
Screen established Louisville Metro health and human-service nonprofits for JGBF eligibility, current or consecutive JGBF grant conflicts, annual operating budget, project maturity, available co-funding, and a genuinely catalytic Health & Well-being initiative before creating an applicant pursuit. Do not treat the Foundation’s project-financing expectations as a formal matching requirement unless JGBF states one for the specific proposal.
