Opportunity Overview

The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting Letters of Interest for the 2027 Wade and Mary Lu Mitchell African American Heritage Preservation Grant, funded through the Mitchell Family Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The program provides up to $20,000 for preservation efforts involving significant African American heritage sites specifically within the City of Atlanta.

Current Application Window

Letters of Interest are currently being accepted and are due Friday, November 20, 2026. The Georgia Trust’s current public grant page does not publish an exact closing clock time or deadline-specific time zone for the Letter of Interest, so Atlas does not infer one. Organizations invited to submit a full application will have a second-stage deadline of February 15, 2027; the public page likewise does not publish an exact closing time or time zone for that stage.

Eligibility

Eligible organizations must be located within the City of Atlanta and have a 501(c)(3) IRS designation or an approved fiscal-agent agreement with a 501(c)(3) organization. Any previously awarded grant must be closed before the organization is eligible to apply. The historic site must be listed in, or eligible for listing in, the National Register of Historic Places.

Eligible Uses and Project Standards

The grant may support physical preservation projects and interpretive projects that contribute to the long-term preservation of significant Black historic sites and increase public awareness of their history. Capital funding is limited to exterior “bricks and mortar” improvements, while interpretive projects must contribute to long-term preservation. Planning, consultants, speakers, and overhead expenses are not eligible. Rehabilitation work must follow the Secretary of the Interior’s standards. Projects should demonstrate significant community impact, broad stakeholder support, and a sustainable long-term use and maintenance plan.

Funding and Match

The maximum published grant amount is $20,000. The current public program page does not state a mandatory percentage or dollar-for-dollar match requirement for this specific grant, although the Letter of Interest instructions require applicants to identify the matching funds they have or plan to have. Atlas therefore does not invent or impose a match percentage that the funder has not expressly published.

Submission Requirements

Organizations seeking consideration must submit a one-page Letter of Inquiry to the Georgia Trust’s Director of Preservation. The letter must identify the historic resource and its address, ownership status, proposed work, requested amount, matching funds available or planned, project-completion timeframe, organization or site web address, and no more than five digital images of the resource or proposed project. Not all Letters of Interest will result in an invitation to submit a full application.

Atlas Analysis

Atlas Opportunity Score: 63/100. This is a current, narrowly targeted Atlanta preservation opportunity with a meaningful maximum award and clearly defined organizational and historic-resource eligibility. Its principal limitations are the specialized preservation scope and the absence of an exact closing clock time and deadline-specific time zone in the current public materials.

N9+ Fit: 0/100. The published scope is historic preservation and interpretation. Atlas will not force N9+ into this opportunity.

QC Healthcare Fit: 0/100. The published scope does not establish a healthcare services, staffing, or clinical procurement pathway.

Outreach Disposition

Draft creation does not authorize ORIGINAL outreach. Any applicant-specific outreach remains fail-closed until Atlas verifies a qualifying Atlanta organization, an eligible historic resource and preservation project, the authoritative business Contact and email, Email_Opt_Out status, permanent hard-bounce status, Deal and Atlas_Email_Queue deduplication, prior successful ORIGINAL transmission history, and resolves any material deadline-time ambiguity. No post-outreach lifecycle field may be modified by this Georgia lane.
