The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is accepting applications for its 2026 Basic Needs Fund. The current round supports organizations providing material basic needs that promote dignity and well-being, with a specific 2026 focus on food security, shelter and housing stability, and clothing and hygiene needs.
Funding and Deadline
The Foundation estimates that $336,000 is available for 2026 grantmaking. Organizations may request up to $10,000. Applications opened September 1 and are due September 30, 2026 at 5:00 PM; the Foundation does not separately publish a time zone. Funding decisions are expected the week of November 23, 2026. Award terms run for 12 months, from November 2026 through November 2027.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must provide qualifying basic-needs services in at least one of six priority communities: New Haven, Hamden, West Haven, East Haven, Ansonia, or Derby. Applicants must have an annual operating budget below $2 million and be current on grant-reporting requirements for Community Foundation or Valley Community Foundation awards received during the prior four calendar years.
The Foundation’s general competitive-grant eligibility rules require applicants to be tax-exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) or another applicable Internal Revenue Code provision, or to use an eligible nonprofit fiscal sponsor. Governmental grants are occasional and local nonprofits receive priority. The Foundation’s general exclusions include municipal departments and Boards of Education unless a specific program says otherwise, so Atlas does not treat school districts as direct applicants for this round.
2026 Eligible Uses
The Basic Needs Fund identifies three primary areas for this round: food security; shelter and housing stability, including eviction support, cash assistance, furniture and energy assistance; and clothing and hygiene needs. Funding may also support staffing, infrastructure, and administrative costs that directly enable delivery of those basic-needs services.

This is a meaningful social-determinants-of-health funding source for community organizations addressing food insecurity, housing instability, hygiene access and other conditions that materially affect health. The Fund’s broader governing definition has historically included non-prescription drugs and essential healthcare not covered by insurance, but the 2026 application criteria are narrower. Applicants should therefore build current requests around the three expressly stated 2026 basic-needs categories and their supporting delivery costs rather than assume unrelated clinical expenses are allowable.
