VentureWell’s E-Team Program provides competitive, non-dilutive grant funding and entrepreneurship training to student-led teams developing science- or engineering-based inventions that address significant health, social, or environmental challenges. The Spring 2027 Pioneer (Stage 1) competition is the entry stage for U.S.-based university invention teams. Awards are made to the participating college or university, not directly to individual students or private ventures.
Each selected Pioneer team receives a $5,000 institution-administered grant and participation in entrepreneurship training. A subsequent, separate Propel (Stage 2) program may award an additional $20,000 only to teams that have completed Pioneer and meet Propel requirements; the combined potential $25,000 is not the initial Pioneer award. The program as a whole distributes more than $800,000 annually across multiple cycles and stages, not per applicant.
The official Spring 2027 calendar confirms that applications open November 9, 2026 and must be submitted by January 25, 2027. The current program FAQ specifies a usual deadline of 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the deadline date; applicants should confirm this in the Spring 2027 application portal when it opens. The official spring Pioneer workshop is scheduled for April 21–22, 2027. As of November 7, 2026, the public application page still describes the previous closed Winter cycle; this Spring round is therefore UPCOMING, not currently open.
Eligible E-Teams are student-led groups with at least two active, enrolled students at a U.S.-based college or university, supported by a faculty Principal Investigator, university grants/administrative contact and department chair. Inventions must be innovative, scientifically or technically grounded, scalable, address a meaningful social or environmental need, and demonstrate a credible commercialization pathway. Eligible topics include medical devices, diagnostics, technologies for underserved communities, food security, energy and environmental solutions. International students can participate at eligible U.S. institutions.
Unfundable projects include drugs or therapeutics, apps lacking genuine technical innovation, pure research without a market route, projects without student leadership, unsustainable one-off interventions, and inventions lacking societal or environmental impact. Funds are held and administered by the institution. The mandatory workshop is funded from the award, and remaining funds may support invention development; institutional overhead is not permitted. The program FAQ does not set a universal applicant matching contribution.
Applications are submitted electronically through VentureWell’s portal. Standing requirements include a five-page narrative, at least one support letter, student-team resumes, and electronic institutional confirmations by the PI, administrative contact and department chair. Applicants should obtain internal campus approvals and review the newly released Spring 2027 guidelines once the November 9 portal opens; the currently visible instructions may describe the previous cycle.
