National Theater Project Presentation Grants — Invited Presenters
The New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) provides the National Theater Project (NTP) Presentation Grant to eligible invited U.S. nonprofit presenting organizations as direct financial assistance for public performances by established NTP-supported projects. Although the separate NTP Creation & Touring Grant ended in its former form, NEFA continues to list Presentation Grants to help existing eligible NTP works tour. These awards are grants, not government contracts for buying services.
Applicant Award and Funding Basis
An invited presenter can be awarded up to 50% of the eligible artist fee, including appropriate artist travel costs. No fixed applicant-level dollar maximum is published; the tour coordinator negotiates the subsidy and artist fee for the individual presentation, and NEFA invites qualified presenters to apply for their own assigned amount. This is not a standard dollar-for-dollar cash-match program; the presenter remains responsible for the unfunded artist fee and other costs. The foundation disburses the grant as reimbursement after eligible performance and approved final reports.
Eligibility
Applicants must be U.S. organizations with nonprofit status that have been included in an eligible NTP project’s submitted tour plan and expressly invited to apply by NEFA. Each funded engagement must include at least one public performance of the exact NTP-supported project. A nonprofit presenter may receive more than one award, but must submit a separate application for each funded project. A current NTP project and its coordinator can be found in the official funder’s project directory; applicants cannot assume an invitation merely from nonprofit status.
Rolling, Invitation-Based Application Process
The grant has a rolling deadline, controlled by project touring schedules and NEFA invitation letters. Tour coordinators negotiate fees, include eligible presenters on a submitted tour plan, and assign each an allowable subsidy not exceeding 50% of the artist fee. NEFA reviews the plan and invites presenters to apply for the specified amount; the official guidance indicates that applications generally become due about 60 days after invitation. Funding decisions and agreements are normally made approximately six to eight weeks after application submission. No universal date or closing time is announced.
Restrictions and Reporting
The artist engagement must be a qualifying public presentation of a supported NTP production. Applicants must submit the organizational IRS W-9 and other identity details required by NEFA’s application portal; note that the older published instructions mention DUNS, so applicants should ask NEFA for current federal identifier requirements. If artist fees change, inform NEFA because the award may be reduced or cancelled. Within one month of the funded event, the grantee must submit its NEFA evaluation, signed artist agreement, publicity materials and associated documentation; grant payment is made after this review. The award is not guaranteed until invited and approved.
