South Arts Arts Journalism Grants: Individual Journalist category

South Arts is accepting applications from qualifying individual arts journalists for its 2026–2027 Arts Journalism Grants pilot. This is a competitive individual award of $5,000 to strengthen independently produced, public-serving arts and cultural journalism, not a contract to promote artists or venues.

Funding and track restrictions

Individual journalists may apply for $5,000 in the Individual Journalist category. Journalism Organization ($10,000) and Travel ($1,000) are separate categories. Only one application in one category per applicant is permitted. No program-wide funding pool for this track is published. No matching funds requirement is stated in the public guidelines.

Who qualifies

Individuals must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with primary residence in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee. Applicants must demonstrate a sustained professional journalism practice over the preceding three years, producing arts journalism for a general public audience (not just academic scholarship). Freelance, independent and university-affiliated journalists can be eligible when their work meets public-service journalism requirements. The separate Travel category has a limited out-of-region exception that does not apply to this Individual Journalist category.

Supported and excluded work

Eligible costs support reporting, research, professional development, memberships, supplies, journalism-related technology, dependent care directly enabling reporting, and necessary reporting travel. Work may include reporting, reviews, criticism, investigation, interviews, photography, podcasts, newsletters, audio and video journalism. Advertising, PR, sponsored/influencer content, institutional marketing, arts productions, scholarly research or coursework, tuition, lobbying, and launching a new outlet are ineligible.
