2027-2032 Herman Frasch Foundation Grants for Agricultural Chemistry Research
The Herman Frasch Fund for Chemical Research, with the American Chemical Society advising the Bank of America, N.A. as trustee, is accepting institutional applications to support agricultural chemistry research with practical benefits for U.S. agriculture. This is a competitive institutional research grant, not a commercial services contract, procurement notice, or general agricultural business grant. The program anticipates approximately eight grants if funds permit.
Individual applicant award and project period
Grants provide up to $50,000 per year for five years, or up to $250,000 per institutional award. The project period is July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2032, with continuation dependent on annual progress and financial reporting. The anticipated eight awards are an award count, not a guarantee. There is no published universal required cash match; institutional acceptance explicitly excludes overhead and administrative charges.
Eligible institutions and investigators
The grantee must be a nonprofit academic institution incorporated and operating in the United States. Eligible principal investigators must be tenured or tenure-track faculty within the first seven years of their first faculty appointment. The foundation allows tenure-clock extension exceptions for formally recognized interruptions such as parental or medical leave, supported by a letter from institutional leadership confirming the duration. Proposals must involve primarily chemical or biochemical research with clear practical value to American agriculture and offer training to students at graduate, undergraduate, or postdoctoral levels. Work focused chiefly on nutrition, agronomy, genetics or entomology is generally not favored.
Allowable costs and restrictions
Funds are preferably directed to student research support, reasonable consumable chemicals and supplies, and necessary proposed research costs. The controlling rules prohibit tuition, institutional overhead and administrative expenses, large equipment, international travel, and principal-investigator salary or benefits. Publication expenses must be budgeted. Other research funding may coexist but must be disclosed. Annual financial, research-progress, and personnel reports are required for continued funding; resulting publications must acknowledge the Frasch Fund.
Controlling deadline and application
Applications opened October 1, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time and close November 5, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Submit through the 2027 Herman Frasch Foundation Grants – Application Form in the American Chemical Society’s Scholarship Lifecycle Manager, linked from its official funder page. Create an account, identify the correct program, and submit required materials before the closing time. Funding decisions are anticipated in February 2027.
Required application materials
Applicants must provide institutional and principal-investigator details; a signed and dated PDF institutional endorsement accepting the no-overhead grant terms; a PI vita of no more than three pages; five recent relevant publications with up to 150 words explaining their relevance; current research-group personnel; an inventory of existing and anticipated research support; a proposed research plan with abstract and explicit U.S. agricultural benefits (maximum 3,500 words, excluding references and structural diagrams); and the foundation’s signed five-year budget and budget-justification template. The budget is capped at $50,000 annually and $250,000 in total and requires both investigator and institutional officer signatures. The funder’s official webpage specifies PDF file-size limits for attachments, and applicants should follow those precisely.
