2027 AASLD Foundation Clinical, Translational and Outcomes Research Award in Liver Diseases (CTORA)

This competitive applicant-facing institutional research award of $200,000 over two years ($100,000 per year) supports early-career investigators conducting clinical, translational, or patient-outcomes research relating to liver diseases. Applications must be received by December 7, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The award runs July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2029, with $25,000 quarterly disbursements and annual continuation subject to required progress and financial reporting.

Who qualifies

Applicants must be AASLD members and within five years of first faculty appointment when the award starts (first appointment no earlier than July 1, 2022, including outside North America), or have a formal department-chair commitment to a faculty position by the July 1, 2027 start and throughout the grant. Researchers must devote at least 50% effort and have an AASLD-member mentor/co-mentor. Sponsoring hosts must be accredited nonprofit health-related research institutions in the United States, Canada or Mexico. NIH, FDA and CDC employees are ineligible. Applicants who previously held comparable early-career salary awards, including many NIH R/P/K mechanisms, are excluded; review the Foundation’s official prior-grant eligibility list. Limit one AASLD Foundation research-award application per individual annually, with no more than one winner per institutional department.

Program scope, restrictions and payment

Support is for liver-related clinical research involving patients, translational projects involving patient specimens, or patient-centered/epidemiologic/health-services outcomes research, not exclusively basic laboratory science. Health-disparities projects are encouraged and meritorious transplant-related research may receive program priority. Allowable award expenses include PI compensation, technical support, and noncapital laboratory supplies. Capital equipment, indirect expenses, registration fees and ordinary travel costs are prohibited; an exception permits up to $2,000 for the PI’s travel to The Liver Meeting in the second/final grant year to provide a progress update. The Foundation does not require or approve a detailed project budget for this category; the institution must ensure allowable use of funds. Additional institutional research support is expected, but no fixed mandatory cash-match percentage is stated.
