Fixed applicant-level $60,000, award term July 1 2027–June 30 2028, deadline Dec 7 2026 11:59 PM ET. AASLD Foundation 2027 Pilot Research Award in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
The AASLD Foundation 2027 Pilot Research Award in Hepatocellular Carcinoma, supported by the Jou Family Memorial Fund, provides $60,000 to an eligible sponsoring nonprofit research institution for one year to test innovative ideas in liver cancer research. Applications are due December 7, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The award period is July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2028. Proposals with little or no preliminary data are welcome; HCC biomarker research receives additional consideration.
Eligible investigators and institutions
The principal investigator must be a current AASLD member, have a faculty appointment at or below Associate Professor, and devote at least 20% effort to the project. Junior faculty must have first held a faculty appointment by July 1, 2024. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level or below require an AASLD-member mentor or co-mentor in good standing. The sponsoring organization must be an accredited public or private nonprofit health-related research institution in the United States, Canada, or Mexico, where the project will be conducted. NIH, FDA, and CDC employees are excluded. Applicants with existing federal grants must demonstrate that the proposed work is wholly distinct and non-overlapping. One AASLD Foundation research-award application per applicant per calendar year is permitted; only one award per institutional department may be funded in this category.
Eligible research and budget limits
Support is for innovative, hypothesis-based basic, clinical, translational, or outcomes research on hepatocellular carcinoma, using one or two aims feasible within the one-year period. Clinical, outcomes, and translational studies must involve patient interaction, clinical information, or samples as applicable. Funds support appropriate direct project expenditures; equipment purchases costing $5,000 or more require prior written Foundation approval. Indirect costs, conference registration, and travel expenses are not allowable. There is no mandatory cash-matching percentage in the controlling RFA. The Foundation expects to disburse the $60,000 in one payment at award initiation, with unspent funds returned after the term. The application RFA has an isolated outdated $50,000 reference in a narrative sentence; the controlling cover, award details and required budget each explicitly state $60,000.
