2027 RUNX1 Early Career Investigator Grant

The RUNX1 Research Program, together with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, offers competitive grants supporting basic and translational scientific research aimed at preventing progression from pre-leukemia to blood cancer in people with RUNX1 familial platelet disorder (RUNX1-FPD). This is an applicant-facing research grant, not procurement. The 2027 application deadline is December 17, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Individual applicant funding

Up to $180,000 over three years, capped at $60,000 each year in eligible direct research costs. No indirect/overhead costs are permitted; investigator salaries must respect the NIH salary cap. Eligible costs include salary/fringe, travel, supplies, small equipment and justified subcontracts. Tuition remission is excluded. No universal mandatory cost-sharing or matching percentage is published. Funding depends on annual progress review; the grant is nonrenewable, with a possible no-cost extension request.

Overlapping scientific or budget funding is prohibited.

Allowable science and limitations

Projects must address biological mechanisms and translation relevant to preventing hematologic malignant transformation in RUNX1-FPD, including clone targeting, inflammation, restoration of RUNX1 function and genomic instability. The research program prohibits studies using human embryonic stem cells or nonhuman primates; human induced pluripotent stem cells are permitted. A resource-sharing plan is mandatory. Recipients must provide progress reports and participate in the annual RUNX1 scientific meeting.
