Art Preservation Fund 2026 Demonstration Fund – Track A: Treatment and Stabilization
The Art Preservation Fund offers grants supporting professional conservation treatment and stabilization of significant art or historic collection items held for public benefit. This distinct Track A competition is for organizations that already have a completed conservation treatment proposal and are ready to implement it.
Individual request maximum: $25,000 (typical awards $10,000-$20,000; approximately six to eight awards anticipated). Deadline: October 30, 2026, 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (5:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time). Project execution is expected to begin January 2027 and generally may take up to 12 months. No required financial match. If total project costs exceed the award request, applicants must show additional secured or reasonably planned financing.
Eligible applicants must be US-based 501(c)(3) organizations or organizations using an eligible fiscal sponsor, with at least 1.0 full-time-equivalent paid staffing and annual operating budgets below $5,000,000. Collections associated with academic or government institutions may apply if the applicant meets the funder nonprofit or fiscal-sponsorship requirement. Applicants must have ownership or documented stewardship authority to treat the items and show a meaningful artistic, cultural or historic public benefit. Rural, small-city, tribal-serving and under-resourced institutions receive special consideration.
Allowable activities include conservation treatment or stabilization, directly necessary rehousing and mounts, documentation, specialized insured shipping, limited directly related staff time, and up to 10% indirect costs. Prohibited work includes building renovations, general operations, acquisition of objects, private-collector projects, unrelated digitization, and architectural heritage projects. Track A applicants must have a completed professional treatment proposal and accept project documentation, an interview, images/captions, public storytelling or reveal, and required midpoint and final reporting.
Applicants should read all official eligibility requirements, assemble the treatment proposal, condition details, budget, treatment schedule, stewardship permissions, and proposed public engagement plan, then use the application form linked on the official grant page. The grant maker anticipates decisions by December 15, 2026. A separate Track B competition provides assessment grants, not treatment funding.
