Maine 2027 Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) Program

FundingUp to $5,000 in grant funds per applicant. This is a 50/50 cash matching grant: applicants must match grant funds dollar for dollar, and no single piece of equipment may exceed $9,999 in total cost.
DeadlineDecember 18, 2026. Online applications must be completed, or paper applications postmarked, by that date. The controlling Maine Forest Service announcement does not state an exact closing clock time or time zone, so Atlas does not infer one.

Required next actionQualified Maine rural fire departments should confirm rural-service eligibility, NIMS compliance, active SAM Unique Entity Identifier status, eligible wildland-fire equipment or training need, required quotes where applicable, and the 50/50 cash match before applying through the Maine Forest Service online application or requesting a paper application. Before any ORIGINAL outreach, verify a specific eligible fire department, a verified business Contact, Email_Opt_Out, bounce history, exact-opportunity CRM/Atlas_Email_Queue/send-history deduplication, and the 48-hour send gate. If exact deadline timing remains unresolved near the cutoff, hold new outreach fail-closed.

Broad Eligibility

Maine fire departments serving rural areas or rural communities generally at or below 10,000 population may qualify. Certain departments in larger communities may qualify only for the portion of service provided to an eligible rural area. Fire departments and municipalities must be NIMS compliant, and applicants must have a current SAM.gov Unique Entity Identifier with annual validation. Unorganized towns, homeowner associations, and plantations without fire departments are not eligible unless they apply through their contracted fire department. Selection priority favors predominantly volunteer departments and applicants without recent VFC awards.

Atlas Analysis

Atlas Opportunity Score 67/100. Current Maine-administered USDA Forest Service pass-through funding with a clear rural public-safety use case, but the maximum grant is only $5,000 and the program is narrowly limited to wildland-fire readiness. Eligible uses include wildland-fire PPE, water-handling equipment, specified hand/power tools, limited communications equipment, GPS/thermal imaging equipment, new dry hydrants, conversion of eligible federal excess equipment, and other approved wildland-fire supplies/equipment. Rescue equipment, drones, cell phones, routine operating expenses, buildings, land, vehicles, and other listed costs are ineligible. N9+ Fit Score 0/100 and Dr. Miltie/QC Healthcare direct-vendor fit 0/100 because the controlling program does not fund clinical, telehealth, or remote-examination technology. Do not force N9+ into this opportunity.
