Opportunity Overview
Open now. The American Psychological Foundation is accepting applications for the David H. and Beverly A. Barlow Grant through September 18, 2026 at 11:59 PM Hawaii Time (HT). The program offers 1 grant of $7,500 for innovative basic and clinical research on anxiety and anxiety-related disorders.
Eligibility
Applicants must be a graduate student or early career researcher, defined by APF as no more than 10 years postdoctoral, and must be affiliated with a nonprofit charitable, educational, or scientific institution or a governmental entity operating exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of anxiety and anxiety research and the competence and capacity to execute the proposed work.
Application Requirements
APF publicly identifies the required materials as a project proposal, project timeline, detailed budget and justification, and CV. The live GivingData portal contains the controlling detailed formatting and content instructions. APF evaluates quality, viability and potential impact, originality and contribution to the anxiety field, applicant competence, and the criticality of the funding to project execution.
Budget and Submission Controls
APF’s general program FAQ states that institutional indirect, administrative, and overhead costs or fees are not allowable from APF grant funds. For research involving human participants, IRB approval is required before funds can be disbursed. No mandatory applicant cost-share requirement was identified in the public program guidance reviewed by Atlas.
Atlas Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 78/100. This is relevant to Kentucky universities, academic medical centers, and nonprofit research institutions with a qualifying graduate student or early career researcher conducting anxiety-focused basic or clinical research.
N9+ Fit: 3/100. The verified purpose is anxiety-focused psychological research rather than telehealth hardware, remote physical examination, diagnostics, or medical-device procurement. N9+ should not be introduced.
Dr. Miltie/QC direct-applicant fit: not established. The named PI must independently satisfy APF’s researcher and institutional-affiliation requirements.
Next Action
The application deadline is less than 48 hours away, so new applicant outreach is not permitted under Atlas rules. Publication remains appropriate. Any Kentucky applicant already actively pursuing this opportunity should immediately rely on the current GivingData portal instructions, confirm PI eligibility and budget compliance, and complete any required institutional and research-compliance steps.
