Opportunity Overview
Open now. Kentucky Humanities is accepting Letters of Intent for its 2026 Public Humanities Grants. Awards are available for up to $5,000 for Kentucky-based public humanities projects. LOIs are due September 30, 2026; invited full applications are due October 31, 2026. The current official grant resources do not publish an exact closing clock time or time zone for either deadline.
Eligibility
Applicants must be a registered Kentucky nonprofit organization, institution, or group. Because awards use federal funds, the grantee organization must have an active SAM.gov registration in good standing and a Unique Entity Identifier. Kentucky Humanities states that an LOI may be submitted before SAM registration is active, but active registration is required to submit the final application. For-profit organizations, individuals, political or advocacy organizations, and current Kentucky Humanities grantees are not eligible.
Eligible Projects
Projects must be Kentucky-based or primarily serve Kentucky residents, be grounded in the humanities, and be directed primarily to the general public outside the regular school or college classroom. Eligible formats may include book discussions, conferences, curricular-material development, exhibits and interpretation, lectures, public discussions, radio or video productions, teacher training, and related public programming. Classroom projects are not eligible.
Each project must receive active guidance from a qualified Principal Humanities Scholar. The Principal Humanities Scholar may not also serve as Project Director and must provide a signed letter of support with the full application.
Funding and Cost Share
The maximum Kentucky Humanities request is $5,000. A 1:1 non-federal cost share is mandatory and may combine cash and documented in-kind contributions. Cost-share expenses must be allowable and documented under applicable federal requirements.
Allowable expenses include project-specific honoraria, stipends, travel, per diem, salaries, professional services, marketing, duplication, supplies, program materials, books, reasonable project-essential food, and other goods or services that clearly advance the project during the award period. General operating or indirect costs, equipment purchases, construction or preservation work, major museum acquisitions, lobbying, alcohol, costs outside the award period, and Kentucky Humanities programming unless specifically approved are not allowable.
LOI Requirements
The official LOI preview requires updated applicant profile information, separate Project Humanities Scholar and Project Bookkeeper contacts, project information including humanities content, and a preliminary project budget. The LOI asks for a project title, anticipated start and end dates, project summary, program format, audience and geographic area, goals and outcomes, the humanities scholar’s role, amount requested, cash and in-kind cost share, total cost share, total project budget, anticipated expense categories, and a budget description. Kentucky Humanities notes that a preliminary project budget of up to $10,000 is used at the LOI stage.
Invited Full Application
Invited applicants must provide the legal grantee organization name associated with the UEI, active SAM registration, an independent audit or most recent IRS Form 990, project staff information, vitae for the Project Director and humanities scholar or scholars, the Principal Humanities Scholar’s signed recommendation, detailed project narrative and audience information, goals and outcomes, event details, and a completed project budget. The project period must begin on or after December 1, 2026 and should conclude by November 30, 2027.
Atlas Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 73/100. This is a verified statewide Kentucky education and public-humanities funding opportunity with a clear award ceiling and detailed application controls. The score is moderated by the required 1:1 non-federal cost share, federal SAM/UEI administration, the restriction against regular classroom projects, and the absence of a published exact closing time and time zone.
N9+ Fit: 0/100. The program funds public humanities programming and expressly excludes equipment purchases. It is not a legitimate healthcare delivery, telehealth, diagnostic, remote-examination, or clinical-equipment pathway.
Dr. Miltie direct-vendor fit: not viable. Dr. Miltie is not established as an eligible public-humanities applicant or necessary vendor under the verified program rules.
Outreach Control
Publication is appropriate because the opportunity is verified open. New applicant outreach remains held until the exact LOI closing clock time and time zone are verified. Any applicant-specific evaluation must also confirm nonprofit or institutional eligibility, public-humanities scope, a separate Project Director and Principal Humanities Scholar, the required 1:1 non-federal cost share, and SAM/UEI readiness for the final application.
