The Better Health Foundation's Fall 2026 Capacity Building and Service Strengthening Letter of Inquiry window closed September 4, 2026. Required next actionDo not treat the Fall 2026 cycle as open. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations in the nine-county greater Quad Cities region should prepare for the next FY2027 Spring Capacity Building or Service Strengthening cycle: refine the community-health problem, measurable outcomes, county-level service reach, collaboration structure, and budget; monitor the Foundation for the Spring LOI opening and deadline; and avoid ineligible direct clinical care, capital projects, research, or debt reduction. Discretionary grants remain separately available year-round for qualifying organizational emergencies through Foundation contact.

Broad Eligibility

501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving the Better Health Foundation's greater Quad Cities region. Iowa counties are Cedar, Clinton, Louisa, Muscatine and Scott; Illinois counties are Henry, Mercer, Rock Island and Whiteside. Public schools and government agencies must partner with a 501(c)(3) service provider, which serves as grantee.

Atlas Analysis

The Fall 2026 Capacity Building and Service Strengthening LOI window closed September 4, 2026 and should no longer be presented as actionable. Better Health Foundation states both grant types will also be considered in Spring FY2027, with dates still to be announced. Requests generally range from $10,000 to $100,000 and align with mental/behavioral health, maternal/child health, and obesity/diabetes priorities. N9+ Direct Vendor Fit 45/100 conditional: this is stronger as an applicant-led health-access and service-strengthening opportunity than as a direct Dr. Miltie procurement.

Fall 2026 Cycle Closed

The Better Health Foundation Fall 2026 Letter of Inquiry window for Capacity Building and Service Strengthening grants closed on September 4, 2026. Atlas no longer treats this Fall round as an active application opportunity.

The Foundation states that both Capacity Building and Service Strengthening grants will also be considered in Spring FY2027, but the next opening and deadline have not yet been published. Atlas is therefore preserving the record as successor-cycle intelligence rather than recycling the closed Fall deadline.

Funding

Both grant types generally consider requests from $10,000 to $100,000. In the Fall cycle, Capacity Building requests of $10,000–$30,000 required only an LOI, while requests above $30,000 required a full application if the LOI was approved. Applicants should verify whether the same structure carries into the Spring cycle when the Foundation releases its next instructions.

Who Can Apply

The Foundation welcomes 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving its nine-county greater Quad Cities region: Cedar, Clinton, Louisa, Muscatine, and Scott counties in Iowa, plus Henry, Mercer, Rock Island, and Whiteside counties in Illinois. Partnerships with non-501(c)(3) organizations are allowed, but the grantee must be a qualifying 501(c)(3), and resource-sharing partnerships require co-signed memoranda of understanding.

What the Foundation Supports

Capacity Building is designed to strengthen nonprofit operations, management, financial planning, sustainability, fundraising, staffing, and other internal capabilities that improve long-term community-health impact. Service Strengthening supports outcomes-based expansion or improvement of programs and services, with additional consideration for collaborative projects that expand services in rural parts of the nine-county region.

The Foundation’s current grantmaking priorities are mental and behavioral health, maternal and child health, and reducing obesity and diabetes risk. BHF does not fund direct medical care in a clinical setting, laboratory or clinical research, building or capital campaigns, debt reduction, or competitors to the MercyOne Genesis, MercyOne, or Trinity Health systems.

Atlas Strategic Analysis

Atlas Opportunity Score: 82/100. This remains a strong regional community-health funding source for eligible nonprofits, but the Fall 2026 LOI window is closed. The next actionable point is the Foundation’s Spring FY2027 release.

N9+ Direct Vendor Fit: conditional and generally low for a stand-alone purchase. Because direct clinical care and capital projects are excluded, organizations should not frame N9+ as a routine medical-device acquisition. A technology component may be supportable only where it is clearly an operating or service-strengthening tool that advances an eligible nonprofit program without becoming direct reimbursable medical care or a capital project.

Recommended Next Action

Eligible nonprofits should use the closed Fall round to prepare early for the Spring FY2027 cycle: define the community-health problem, target population and counties served, measurable outcomes, partnership structure, sustainability plan, and a request within the Foundation’s typical $10,000–$100,000 range. Monitor the Foundation’s grants page for the next LOI opening and deadline. Separately, BHF states that discretionary grants may be considered throughout the year for qualifying organizational emergencies.
