Opportunity Overview
The Vermont Community Foundation 2026 Nonprofit Capacity Building Grant supports consultant-led, high-level organizational planning that strengthens a nonprofit or municipality’s long-term effectiveness, decision-making, and financial sustainability. The program is not intended for routine operations or implementation work.
Funding and Deadline
Grants are typically up to $5,000 and may be used only for consultant fees. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and the 2026 program closes on November 1, 2026. The Foundation states that funds are expected to be limited after September 1. The public program page does not publish a closing clock time or time zone.
No mandatory match percentage is published. However, the Foundation states that the grant is intended to supplement other funding and requires the project budget to show additional pending and secured revenue sources.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must be located in or serve the people of Vermont. Vermont Community Foundation grants are paid to registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits or public entities such as municipalities, public schools, or state agencies; other eligible community groups may apply through a qualifying fiscal sponsor. For this program, organizations must have annual operating budgets under $1 million, with priority given to organizations under $250,000.
Eligible Planning Activities
Examples include strategic planning, financial sustainability and revenue-diversification planning, merger planning, diversity, equity and inclusion policy development, organization-wide board and leadership training, and consultant-led planning for organizational adjustments caused by changes in federal funding or policy.
Grant funds can be used only for consultant fees. The program does not support grant-writing fees, salaries or benefits, individual professional development, licensure or recertification, routine software training, marketing or communications production, web development, construction or structural design, event planning, implementation of strategic or financial plans, or organizations with annual operating budgets above $1 million.
Submission Mechanics
Applications are submitted electronically through the Vermont Community Foundation Online Grants Manager. The Foundation indicates that applicants may need organizational financial documents, project budgets, project narrative, and outcome information depending on the program. Decisions are typically made within two months of receipt.
N9+ and QC Healthcare Analysis
Atlas Opportunity Score: 71/100. This is a legitimate statewide Vermont nonprofit-development opportunity, including for qualifying health and education nonprofits, but it is restricted to consultant-led organizational planning rather than direct clinical, equipment, or service delivery costs.
N9+ Fit Score: 0/100. The program does not provide a legitimate pathway for the Nonagon N9+ device and platform because funds are limited to consultant fees for organizational planning.
QC Healthcare Fit: 0/100. Ongoing clinical services, staffing, and implementation costs are outside the program’s stated purpose.
Next Action
Eligible Vermont-serving nonprofits and municipalities should identify a discrete high-level planning need, confirm annual operating-budget eligibility, secure an appropriate consultant, document the full project budget and other revenue sources, and apply promptly while 2026 funds remain available.
