Protective Life Foundation, based in Birmingham, Alabama, accepts grant applications from eligible nonprofit organizations primarily serving the Birmingham metropolitan area. The Foundation supports community needs including education, food security, shelter, disaster relief and other work that improves quality of life. Protective’s current community materials also identify public health and community wellness among areas of impact, creating legitimate relevance for qualified Alabama healthcare and community health organizations.
The Foundation’s current contribution guidelines state that applicants must be IRS certified 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organizations, operate primarily within the metro Birmingham area, demonstrate strong financials and a current operating budget, have strong leadership and a local board or advisory board, and align with Protective Life Corporation’s culture, mission and values.
The published quarterly application deadlines are January 21, April 21, July 21 and October 21. For the current cycle, the next published deadline is October 21, 2026. Protective does not publish a closing clock time or time zone in the current guidelines, and notes that deadlines may change based on the committee meeting schedule.
The application requests organizational and project contact information, project name and mission, Executive Director experience and biography, staffing information, governance and board information, other funders and income sources, prior year operating results, current year budget, balance sheet and endowment information, IRS 501(c)(3) designation letter, current IRS W-9, population served, amount requested and intended use of funds. Applications are submitted through Protective’s online grant application portal. Review does not begin until an application is submitted, and the current guidelines state that applicants cannot edit a submission after it is submitted.
Protective generally does not consider organizations outside its funding area, public or private K through 12 schools, houses of worship, public facilities primarily supported by taxes, state or state supported organizations, animal causes, sporting events, corporate or private foundations, organizations regranting funds to others, or grants to groups or individuals. The current public guidelines do not state a mandatory applicant match or cost share requirement and do not publish a minimum or maximum award amount.

A Birmingham area nonprofit with a documented community health, access to care or wellness project may have a legitimate role for the Nonagon N9+ device and platform or QC Healthcare as a project vendor or partner, but Protective’s current public guidelines do not specifically identify telehealth, remote physical examination, medical devices, clinical technology or equipment as preferred or expressly allowable costs.
