FY2027 Flash Grant Cycle 2 — New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)
The North Carolina Biotechnology Center is accepting Cycle 2 Flash Grant proposals for short, tightly focused life-sciences research projects involving New Approach Methodologies. Current topics include human-derived organoids, organ-on-a-chip systems, microphysiological systems, high-throughput cell-based screening, reconstructed or maintained ex vivo human tissues, and other human-relevant model systems for studying disease mechanisms, safety, efficacy or toxicity.
Deadline: Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at noon. The controlling NCBiotech program page publishes the clock time but does not separately state a time zone, so Atlas does not infer one.
Funding: Up to $30,000 for the base research award. Eligible non-R1 universities may request an undergraduate-intern supplement of up to $7,500, for a maximum applicant-relevant amount of $37,500. Projects may run for up to 12 months.
Eligibility: Funds are available to researchers at North Carolina universities and nonprofit research institutes. The PI must hold an eligible permanent full-time research, clinical or tenure-track/tenured role under the controlling Cycle 2 guidelines; postdoctoral and adjunct positions are not eligible as PI positions.
Program fit: Proposals primarily focused on artificial intelligence, in-silico modeling/simulation or in-silico experiments are strongly discouraged even if they relate to NAMs. Flash Grants do not support development of consumer products or mobile applications.
Match / cost share: The controlling Cycle 2 guidelines state that no match is required.
Allowable-cost highlights: The Cycle 2 guidelines permit eligible experimental supplies, certain contracted research/manufacturing and consulting services, animal costs, core-facility charges, business-case assessment work, software subscriptions of one year or less, and scientific/laboratory/computational equipment where total requested equipment remains below the program limit. Indirect/overhead costs, travel, legal fees, patent/publication costs, long-term software subscriptions and otherwise excluded salary costs are not allowable under the Cycle 2 rules. Applicants must follow the current guideline and budget form for exact treatment.

The proposal package requires the NCBiotech Funding Portal submission plus the required signed cover sheet, technical proposal, budget materials and supporting documentation specified in the Cycle 2 guidelines. New PIs must register for the Funding Portal in advance of the deadline.
Recipient-specific documentation: Applicable submissions may require institutional technology-transfer attestation for project-related intellectual property and appropriate IRB/IACUC materials for human or animal work. Applicants should use the current checklist and guideline set posted by NCBiotech immediately before submission.

Realistic eligible organizations: North Carolina universities and nonprofit research institutes with active NAM capabilities are the intended applicant environment. Duke University, NC State University and Wake Forest University School of Medicine are examples of North Carolina research institutions with relevant biomedical research infrastructure; PI and project eligibility must be verified individually.
