Next50 Sudden and Urgent Need (SUN) Grants provide one-time support to small Colorado-based nonprofit organizations serving marginalized older adults. The 2026 SUN cycle is invitation-only and accepted on a rolling basis while funds are available; Next50 does not publish a fixed closing date, clock time, or time zone for SUN.
Funding: Grant amounts are typically under $30,000. Next50’s general 2026 funding guidance describes SUN as up to $30,000. No mandatory match or cost-share requirement is stated in the current official SUN guidance.
Eligibility: Applicants must be Colorado-based nonprofits organized under IRS Section 501(c)(3), in good standing in Colorado, serve marginalized older adults, and have an organizational budget of $1 million or less. Government entities and universities are not eligible for SUN grants.
Controlling need test: The requested expense must address a need that is unbudgeted, unforeseen, time-sensitive, and significantly interferes with the organization’s ability to serve older adults and/or caregivers, or presents an immediate opportunity to enhance services. The expense must be one-time rather than part of general operating or ongoing program costs.
Priority areas: Applicants should align with one or more of Next50’s priorities: Ending Ageism, Advancing Digital Equity, and Supporting Aging in Place. Applicants must also show how their work contributes to the economic well-being of older adults and demonstrate a current focus on marginalized people age 50+ and/or their caregivers.
Eligible-use examples: Next50 specifically gives examples including an unexpected replacement part needed to keep a rural mobile technology-training vehicle operating, emergency repair after a water leak forces older-adult classes to stop, and sudden legal/moving expenses after an unexpected lease nonrenewal. These examples support legitimate one-time emergency equipment/technology or continuity costs when the triggering need independently satisfies SUN’s sudden-and-urgent standard.
Not eligible: SUN does not support general operating or ongoing program costs, anticipated annual expenses, service-area or population expansion, routine dues or indirect costs, endowments or fundraising, routine events/travel, individual medical bills or household expenses, lobbying or political campaigns, or ordinary personnel/consultant costs unless directly related to implementing a qualifying one-time urgent need. Next50’s FAQ also excludes requests that duplicate state or federal funding, requests for matching state or federal funding, and gap-filling of state/federal funding without a sustainability path.
Application and submission: 2026 applications are by invitation only. Interested organizations may request a meeting with a Next50 Community Impact Manager; Next50 states that it typically responds to meeting requests within three business days. Applications use Next50’s Fluxx Grantmaking portal after the invitation process. The meeting-request channel is expressly for legitimate funding discussions and prohibits unsolicited sales pitches or marketing communications.
Grant agreement and reporting: Potential grantees must review and accept Next50’s Grant Agreement without modification and affirm authority to enter the agreement. At grant end, grantees must provide a financial expenditure report including receipts or paid invoices for grant expenses and a short narrative impact report within 90 days.
Atlas fit assessment: Atlas Opportunity Score 89/100. N9+ Fit Score 32/100 conditional. A legitimate N9+ pathway exists only where an otherwise eligible nonprofit has an independently documented, sudden, unforeseen, unbudgeted, time-sensitive remote-assessment or related technology need necessary to continue serving older adults; SUN is not a vehicle for ordinary planned equipment acquisition or program expansion. QC Healthcare / other Dr. Miltie fit is 10/100 conditional, because consulting costs are generally outside scope unless directly tied to implementing a qualifying one-time urgent need. Dr. Miltie, LLC is not a direct applicant under the nonprofit eligibility rules.
Atlas caution: Do not manufacture or infer an emergency. Applicant-specific advancement should occur only after independently verifying the organization’s current budget, Colorado good standing, service to Next50’s priority populations, and a genuine qualifying SUN event.
